Gola del Furlo

Close to the town of Fossombrone there is the Furlo Massif, halfway between the coast and the Appenines. It is the Furlo Gorge, a deep and narrow cleft separating two maountains the Pagnucco (976m) and the Pietralata (888m). Almost vertical walls engraved in the limestone in the middle of which the Candigliano river flows. This represents the amministrative edge of 4 different municipalities. The river wedges itself in the gorge and in the narrowest point it overcomes the 10m drop by means of a fall; later on a dike was built and it's totally visible by the road running along, the famous Via Flaminia. These particular characteristics in the local morphology made the gorge uneasy to cross and represent a division element in an unavoidable passage between the Metauro Valley and the inner one, Valle del Burano, anteroom to the Tiber Valley. This area has recently been defined National Natural Preserve.
